If you have a German Shepherd, you already know they can make just about anything look adorable. Add a Halloween costume, spooky bandana, or themed outfit and suddenly you have the cutest dog at the Halloween party. 🎃🐕
But finding clothes and costumes that actually fit a large dog can be a little more challenging.
As a German Shepherd mom to Turbo and Nova, I’ve tried quite a few different options over the years. Some have been adorable but didn’t fit well, while others surprised me with how comfortable and easy they were to put on.
Here are some of my favorite Halloween costumes and themed clothes for German Shepherds and other large dogs—including a few that Turbo and Nova have personally worn!
🦁 1. Lion Mane Costume – Turbo’s Halloween Look
One of my favorite costumes we’ve tried was a lion mane for Turbo.
German Shepherds already have that big, fluffy, majestic look, so turning one into a lion is honestly pretty perfect. 😂

I also love that a lion mane is much simpler than putting your dog into a full-body costume. It’s quick to put on and makes a big impact in pictures.

🦇 2. Bat Wings – Nova’s Halloween Costume
Last Halloween, Nova went as a bat! 🦇

I especially like costumes like this for bigger dogs because you can get the Halloween look without covering their entire body.
And let’s be honest—a German Shepherd with bat wings is pretty hard to beat. 😂
🎃 3. Halloween Bandanas – The Easy Option
Not every dog wants to wear a costume.
And that’s okay!
A Halloween-themed bandana is probably one of the easiest ways to make your dog festive while keeping things simple.

Bandanas are also a great option if your dog isn’t comfortable wearing costumes but you still want to include them in the Halloween fun.
Tip: Always supervise your dog while wearing a bandana or any other clothing accessory.

👻 How to Choose a Halloween Costume for a German Shepherd
When you’re shopping for a costume for a large dog, fit and comfort should come before appearance.
I know we’re all looking for the cutest Halloween costume possible, but your dog should be comfortable wearing it.
📏 Measure Your Dog First
Don’t rely solely on the size listed as “large” or “XL.”
Measure your dog’s:
- Neck
- Chest
- Back length
- Overall body size
Every brand can fit differently.
This is especially important with German Shepherds because they’re large dogs but can have very different body shapes.
🐾 Make Sure They Can Move
Your dog should be able to:
- Walk normally
- Sit down
- Lie down
- See clearly
- Breathe normally
- Move their legs freely
A costume shouldn’t restrict your dog’s normal movement or make them uncomfortable. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends choosing costumes based on safety and the individual dog’s comfort rather than simply how cute they look.
👀 Watch Your Dog’s Body Language
Some dogs absolutely love wearing clothes.
Others look at you like you’ve completely betrayed them. 😂
If your dog is showing signs of stress or discomfort, take the costume off.
There’s nothing wrong with choosing a simple bandana instead.
🚫 Avoid Small or Dangling Pieces
Be careful with costumes that have buttons, beads, ribbons, elastic pieces, or other decorations your dog could chew off and swallow. The AKC recommends avoiding detachable costume pieces that could become choking or ingestion hazards.
And never leave your dog unattended while wearing a costume.

Once you’ve found the perfect outfit, you obviously need pictures.
Take your German Shepherd outside with some pumpkins, colorful leaves, or Halloween decorations and let them be the star of your Halloween photoshoot.
And don’t worry if you don’t get the perfect picture on the first try.
With my dogs, I usually take about 50 pictures to get one where they’re both looking at the camera. 😂

Halloween is a great excuse to have a little fun with your dog, whether they’re wearing a full costume or simply sporting a cute bandana.
For Turbo, the lion mane was a fun and surprisingly good fit.
For Nova, the bat wings were absolutely adorable.
And if your dog isn’t a fan of costumes, don’t force it! A cute bandana or themed hoodie can be just as festive.
The most important thing is that your dog is comfortable, safe, and included in the fun.
